It's impossible to chart the influence David Bowie had on music and culture before his untimely death but today the video for 'I Can't Give Everything Away' is another reminder of the insurmountable loss.
'I Can't Give Everything Away' is a single from Bowie's parting gift, Blackstar. The accompanying video is the work of British graphic designer, Jonathan Barnbrook.
With sweeping ballad riffs and yearning lyrics from the legend, Bowie's Blackstar holds more poignancy and depth than his previous albums. Barnbrook has designed Bowie's album artwork since 2002's Heathen, breathing new life and vibrancy into each typeface.
Barnbrook continues his faithful work in this particular video as from the mundane blank and white, the video explodes into a world of colour.
"We start off in black and white world of ★, but in the final chorus we move to brilliant colour, I saw it as a celebration of David, to say that despite the adversity we face, the difficult things that happen such as David’s passing, that human beings are naturally positive," Barnbrook testifying to the light and positivity that Bowie created with his work "They look forward and can take the good from the past and use it as something to help with the present. We are a naturally optimistic species and we celebrate the good that we are given.”
In true form, Bowie's death was a work of art in itself. Blackstar remains the fastest selling artist album of the year so far and may it remain so.
