Actions speak louder than likes
Kerri stood with her head bowed over her phone and her eyes fixated on the screen. She scrolled rapidly through Facebook absorbing all the content she had been deprived of while at work.
An image of two people hugging on a bench. The words: Hugging is a silent way of saying… you matter to me. Kerri touched LIKE.
She gripped her phone in her left hand while her right thumb remained bare and exposed to the below freezing temperatures. For the first time in thirteen years, it was snowing. Oblivious to this, she continued to scroll aimlessly.
An image of the Dalai Lama. The words: If you want others to be happy, practice compassion. Kerri touched LIKE.
Rush hour was peaking, and more people gathered at the bus shelter. Nobody talked but instead bowed their heads over their phones.
An image of the sun setting behind mountains. The words: Father, give me a heart of integrity and compassion. Kerri touched LIKE.
The sun had just begun to set. It reflected from the windows of numberless buildings creating a golden hue as it promised to be a picturesque evening.
An image of a young boy feeding a pigeon. The words: Be generous with your time, your money and your heart. Kerri touched LIKE.
Her bus was scheduled to arrive in 5 minutes. Kerri had more than enough change for six journeys rattling in the pockets of her duffle coat.
An image of a woman helping a homeless person. The words: Be the reason someone smiles today. Kerri touched LIKE.
An old woman laboured toward the bus stop, towing a cart full of bulging plastic bags and a rolled sleeping bag. She wore a dirty green jacket, soiled pants and boots as she began approaching awaiting passengers.
Kerri’s eyes were fixed on her phone. She scrolled through hundreds of images with her restless finger. Occasionally she would pause for a second, indulge in her own reaction and sometimes she would even laugh.
An image of an elderly man sitting on a bench. The words: Wrinkles mean you laughed, grey hair means you cared, and scars mean you lived. Kerri touched LIKE.
The old woman stopped and stared down at her boots. Her bare, unprotected and wrinkled hands trembled. Her lips quivered as she began to speak.
“Any spare change for a hostel, love?”
“I don’t have any money on me, sorry,” Kerri responded before quickly returning her attention to her phone.
The old woman looked helpless and continued forward, before stopping at an archway beside the bus shelter. She began to unravel her sleeping bag to set up for a cold night.
Kerri looked at the next image. She read the words: Practice what you preach or change your speech.
Kerri touched LIKE.
