You Gotta Grohl with it...

Or what happened when a hard rock legend brought some mates ‘round to mourn the passing of one of the world’s most storied studios

Stuart Clark, 27 Feb 2012

Just when you think that Dave Grohl can’t be any more of a genius than he is, the Foo Fighter-in-chief (1) jams at the Grammys with Macca and The Boss and (2) makes a documentary about Los Angeles’ legendary Sound City studio, which closed last year.

Working his seriously rock ‘n’ roll address book, Grohl managed to lure Tom Petty, Trent Reznor, Josh Homme, Lars Ulrich and, er, Rick Springfield into Sound City for one final jam session.

“That place was like a church,” he fondly reminisces. “The list of people that recorded there is like a virtual Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame. We recorded Nevermind there back in 1991. That funky old place had the best drum room in the world. The drum sound at the beginning of ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit’? That’s Sound City. I decided to make a film about that feeling when you put five guys in a room, hit ‘record’ and the hair on the back of your neck stands up. Expect some epic jam sessions.”

Watch the teaser trailer at soundcitymovie.com.

Anyone heading to next month’s SXSW showcase festival in Austin, Texas should check out Ghanaian rap duo Fokn Bois who’ve caused something of a regional West African stir with their ‘Thank God We’re Not A Nigerians’ (sic). Actually, stir is something of an understatement – Wanlov The Kuvolor III and M3nsa The Magnificent have received death threats for couplets like: ‘Email fraud, Pyramid, 419/Oh, that’s not fine/Thank God we’re not a Nigerians/But at least you are better than Liberians.’

Check the chaps out at foknbois.bandcamp.com and youtube.com/watch?v=wdg-_TRiNkw.

Which just leaves time for quick visits to abandonedireland.com/start.html (more reasons to emigrate); youtube.com/watch?v=Py_IndUbcxc (insane ‘Nazis from the moon’ film trailer)’; and sublimefrequencies.com/item.asp?Item_id=26&cd=Radio- (North Korean pop sampler).
