Luke Morgan (pictured above receiving his award from the Lord Mayor of Dublin, Councillor Christy Burke, at the Mansion House, Dublin last Thursday), one of the regional winners in the Hot Press Write Here, Write Now competition, has had a film accepted by the Cannes Film Festival 2015. Write Here, Write Now is run by Hot Press in conjunction with the One City One Book festival, and is supported by Dublin City Libraries, Dublin City Council, The Department of Arts, Heritage and the Gaeltacht, Eason and Microsoft Office 365. Luke’s entry, Ewetopia, won the Connaught prize, in the third-level male category.
Meanwhile, Luke’s debut documentary, Pockets, has been selected to screen at Europe’s pre-eminent film festival in Cannes later this month, as part of the festival’s Short Film Corner. Pockets has been described as ‘’a family affair’, with his mother taking the starring role.
“I knew immediately that Luke’s Write Here, Write Now entry was a bit special,” Hot Press editor Niall Stokes, who is also Chairman of the competition judging panel, said. “It was a fantastic week for him, taking a regional title in Write Here, Write Now, where the overall quality of the entries was so amazingly high, and even more impressively again, getting the nod from Cannes, which is something that very few Irish film directors have achieved. On behalf of everyone involved in Write Here, Write Now, I want to extend our warmest congratulations to Luke on this achievement."

His poetry has appeared in the UK’s Poetry Review, The Poetry Ireland Review, The Irish Independent and The Moth. He won the inaugural Poetry Ireland/ Trocáire competition in his category in 2012. His original screenplay 5 Things You Need To Know About Dying was premiered at the Richard Harris International Film Festival. He told Hot Press that his passion is for writing animation for children. He hopes to turn his Write Here, Write Now entry, Ewetopia, into an animated film.
