UTV Radio Stations Give Irish Music Major Boost

Stations including FM104 and Q102 will chose one Irish song per month to occupy a premium spot on their playlists.

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 14 May 2012

UK-based media company UTV Radio, which owns some of Ireland's major radio stations, has come up with a brand new initiative to get more Irish music on the airwaves. Entitled Select Irish, the move will see all UTV Radio stations give one Irish song significant airplay across their schedules every month.

In Dublin, this means airplay on either FM104 or Q102, in Cork, 96FM or C103, in Limerick, Limerick’s Live 95FM and on LMFM in Louth/Meath, with a combined weekly reach of 972,000 people.

The initiative, which is due to kick off on June 1, has already selected its first Irish-penned track, 'Say Something' by Dublin band The Shoos.

“We’re delighted to have been chosen by UTV," lead singer Tex says, "this is exactly what Irish bands and the Irish music industry desperately needs, especially now, it’s fantastic that a group such as UTV have recognized this. UTV and particularly Dave Kelly in FM104 have always been supportive of what we do, which we really appreciate, and we look forward to getting move involved with this great initiative.”

Kelly added, "Airplay will be decided by all four station’s Programme Directors. This is a really exciting time for us as Irish Music is a very important part of our output and essential for our listeners across the country.”

Material is being accepted via selectirish@utvradio.ie, so if you're a new or established record label or band, it's time to get submitting! Just remember that all songs must be recorded to on air quality.
