Joseph O'Neill and Niall Williams are both in contention for the £50,000 prize.
Irish novelists Joseph O'Neill and Niall Williams have both been named on the 13-strong longlist for the 2014 Man Booker Prize.
O'Neill, born in Cork and living in New York, is up for The Dog, will Dubliner Williams' History Of The Rain is also nominated.
It means there is a strong Irish presence on the longlist despite the fact the Man Booker Prize has been opened for the first time to all novels originally written in English and published in the UK.
Historically, the competition was only open to authors from Britain, the Commonwealth, Ireland and Zimbabwe.
The new rules see four American novelists make the longlist this year, among them Joshua Ferris and Karen Joy Fowler. Judges will decide on a shortlist of six by September 9, before the winner is announced October 14.
The last Irish winner was Anne Enright, – The Gathering earned the prestigious accolade in 2007.
