Progress is hotly tipped to be top at Christmas
It's a good start for Take That's first album release since Robbie Williams rejoined the fold. Their new Progress album went straight in at No. 1, selling over half a million copies. On its first day of release alone, 235,000 copies were snapped up, making it the fastest selling album of the century thus far. The band's shrewd move to release early in the week still didn't ensure that they eclipsed Oasis' Be Here Now in terms of first week sales however.
Up against that kind of first week success, Rihanna understandably had to settle for second place. Her fifth album Loud debuted just below the boy (or, at this stage, middle-aged man) band, meaning last week's No. 1 , The Gift by Susan Boyle, slipped down to third. The top five is completed by two other new entries - Andre Rieu and Johann Strauss' Moonlight Serenade is at No. 4, whilst Pink's Greatest Hits comes in at No. 5.
In a victory for taste, Bruce Springsteen's The Promise, an album comprising the staggering amount of material that didn't make his Darkness On The Edge Of Town 1978 album, debuts at No. 7.
