The Offaly man has Georgia on his mind in the new issue of Hot Press, as he chats ahead of his first tilt at capturing the famous green jacket
Given the dramatic entrance that Shane Lowry made when winning the Irish Open as an amateur in 2009, it’s easy to forget that the 27-year-old is still only getting started. With that in mind, he’s gearing up for his first trip to Augusta National for the US Masters – and, he tells HP’s Colm O’Regan, that he’s not sure what to expect.
“I don’t know what to think,” he smiles. “I’m trying not to build it up too much. Padraig Harrington said to me: ‘The Masters is everything you think it will be... and more’. I think that kind of sums it up! I’ve got a house rented for the week, and my dad and brother are coming over, along with my fiancée and a couple of my close friends.”
It’s not a family holiday, though – it’s a business trip for Lowry, who’s travelling with only one thing on his mind.
““In a sense,” he says, “I’m treating it as though it’s just another event, no different to any other. I definitely won’t be going into it thinking I can’t win.”
