The lyrics for Robbie Williams' comeback single 'Party Like a Russian', along with the accompanying music video, features crude stereotypes of the country which many fans have taken as offensive.
The song, which is the lead single from Robbie's new album Heavy Entertainment Show, features an unusual sample of 'Dance Of The Knights' from Sergey Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet (fans of The Apprentice UK will recognise it instantly).
"Put a doll inside a doll inside a doll inside a doll inside a doll/I put a bank inside a car inside a plane inside a boat/It takes half the Western world just to keep my ship afloat" are just some of the lyrics which appears to uses Russian stereotypes to make oblique potshots at Vladimir Putin.
Despite the obvious connect to the Russian Premier, Robbie Williams has taken to Twitter to rubbish the claims that his lyrics refer to Putin, but that hasn't stopped a backlash from music fans.
Russian tabloid newspaper Life claimed that Williams would never be invited to perform in the country again, calling the video “s*** because it imparts the puny, vulgar Russian elite, which has nothing to do with aesthetics, beauty or romanticism.”
