Rory Gallagher tribute unveiled
Temple Bar was brought to a standstill at the unveiling of a sculpture honouring Rory Gallagher last Friday.
The bronze model of Rory's Fender Stratocaster was unveiled by his brother and manager Donal and The Edge, who paid tribute to the way the boy from Ballyshannon blazed a trail for later Irish acts like U2.
A tribute gig took place afterwards, with all the free tickets snapped up long in advance. The show was introduced by Mark Walsh of Keynote Music, who played a vital role in getting the sculpture erected, and Dave Fanning, who told the audience that Gallagher's first album was still one of his favourites.
The atmosphere at the gig was fantastic, and showcased just how broad Rory's appeal was, with old school rockers dancing alongside civil servants and teenagers. And judging by the cheers and chants of Rory's name, they all miss him as much as ever.
