A bronze sculpture of Rory Gallagher's famous Stratocaster guitar will be unveiled in a ceremony next week in Temple Bar - and you could be there.
Dermot McLaughlin, chief executive of the Temple Bar Cultural Trust said: "The idea behind this new piece of public art is to celebrate and honour Rory Gallagher, a fantastic world class musician who played here in Temple Bar and who has a public corner named in his honour."
The Lord Mayor Councillor Catherine Byrne will unveil the tribute at Rory Gallagher Corner on East Essex Street, near Meeting House Square, at an outdoor public ceremony at 8.30 pm on Friday June 16. After the unveiling there will be an outdoor concert on the Square.
Tickets to the free event can be collected from the Temple Bar Cultural Information Centre at 12 East Essex Street, Temple Bar, Dublin 2.
The idea for the guitar statue came from instrument dealer Mark Walsh of Keynote Music, who called Gallagher Ireland's "first rock'n'roll star", and described him as a trailblazer whose record sales and tours paved the way for other Irish artists.
"As musical instrument sellers we owe our livelihood to him and the others who followed bringing Irish rock to the world," Walsh said. "Now...Dublin honours one of Ireland's greatest sons. Let's remember Rory with this long overdue tribute."
