Murphy appears tonight in the Dublin Writers’ Centre.
Punk legend Richard Hell – yes, he of the Voidoids’ ‘Blank Generation’ fame! – has said some incredibly nice things about Peter Murphy’s Shall We Gather At The River ahead of its Stateside release in the autumn. The novel’s title has been changed to The River And Enoch O’Reilly for US consumption, but remains a right riveting read!
“This book is majestic and squalid at the same time, as if the Bible were actually about Elvis,” says the man who taught the Sex Pistols a lot of what they knew about punk.
“The rhythm and music carry you like a baby on a raft on the river, but it's the precision of the words that cinches you. Maybe best of all, it makes you think and argue, first with the author and then with everything around you."
Meanwhile, tonight (June 18) finds Mr. Murphy, Red Sky In The Morning author Paul Lynch and Kerry Group winner Gavin Corbett appearing together at the Dublin Writers’ Centre on Parnell Square. Kick-off is 7.30pm.
