Having fought the Romney camp's use of 'The Boys Are Back In Town', she would now like the song played at Obama's inauguration...
Philomena Lynott has joined the chorus of congratulations to Barack Obama ringing out from Ireland to Washington – and has urged the President to use ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ at his impending re-inauguration.
“This is a wonderful day for America and people across the world,” she said. “ I would like to express my sincere congratulations to Barack Obama on his victory. He is a wonderful man and stands for many of the values I hold dear. He is a truly inspirational leader. I know Philip too, would have been delighted that he has won a second term in office.”
Philomena spoke out in Hot Press recently against Mitt Romney’s appropriation of ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ for his election campaign.
"I am really upset at Philip's music being used in Mitt Romney's campaign in a political way that Philip would not have approved of," she told Hot Press. "As far as I am concerned, Mitt Romney's opposition to gay marriage and to civil unions for gays makes him anti-gay – which is not something that Philip would have supported. He had some wonderful gay friends, as indeed I do, and they deserve equal treatment in every respect, whether in Ireland or the United States.
"Neither would Philip have supported his policy of taxing the poor and offering tax cuts to the rich, which Paul Ryan is advocating. There is certainly no way that I would want the Lynott name to be associated with any of those ideas.
She is now urging the President to use the 1976 hit at his inauguration, citing it a fitting soundtrack to the pivotal event.
“It would be fantastic if President Obama used ‘The Boys Are Back In Town’ at his second inauguration as President of the United States of America,” she said. “As well as being a wonderfully appropriate song, it would undo the harm done by Mitt Romney, stealing it for illicit use in his campaign. Philip would be delighted to see his music used in this way.”
