The first day off the festival kicked off with better weather than the same time last year – though only just.
Intermittent heavy showers caused the mud to rival that of Glastonbury – and the Pet Sounds stage caved in enough to let water through!
The Cribs were the first band of the festival – “we’ve never done that before”, they told hotpress.com in a video interview. Expect others from The Horrors and Delorentos on hotpress.com in due course.
Biffy Clyro took to the second stage later in the day, but because of equipment problems, arrived just in time to play their set – with borrowed gear!
Theirs wasn’t the only problem: delayed sets and technical problems meant headliners Muse, who brought their family over for the occasion - went on over half an hour later than scheduled, but played a spectacular set including ‘Feeling Good’, ‘Supermassive Black Hole’ and closer ‘Plug In Baby’.
Mika was hanging backstage, which pleased Beth Ditto: "I came in my pants a little bit. I didn't tell him. You know, I’m not very good at keeping cool when I have to."
Such was Ditto’s euphoria that half-way through The Gossip’s set she whipped off the sparkly dress she was wearing to reveal her equally glam undies. Less impressive were the neanderthal boos that greeted their ace cover of Wham’s ‘Careless Whispers’.
In the backstage area, where the Live Earth concert was being shown, the Real Gourmet Burger queue at one point consisted of Michael Stipe from REM and Helena Christensen, who were also sighted watching Queens Of The Stone Age, Scissor Sisters, Kings Of Leon and The Gossip at the side of the stage.
Hollywood stars swapped the red carpet for muddy swamps, as Susan Sarandon and husband Tim Robbins were present, as was Josh Hartnett Stephen Rae.
Will they be there tomorrow? Check back for our Sunday report.
