Geoff Hatt’s second album is a glowing testament to the redemptive power of love. He gives us a brief track-by-down run-down...
Ten Year Road, the debut album from Geoff Hatt (nee Gatt), was a touching, moving record about grief. His follow up, It’s All Going On, is a touching, moving record about much happier things. We’ll catch up with Geoff later for a proper chat, but in the meantime, hopefully this track-by-track run-down on a project inspired by “coming through hard times and then finding (and marrying) a wonderful lady,” will inspire you to investigate one of Belfast’s most charmingly idiosyncratic and big-heartedtalents.
'I WENT LOOKING'
This is a very simple song about trying to help and understand someone you love, and you don’t know how or what is wrong. You just have to trust your heart.
'It’s All Going On'
This is really about the appreciation of the moments when there isn’t anything momentous going on, just the chance to contemplate the millions of wonderful things about this life.
'Itching'
After enough peace and contemplation, you start to get the good old need to get back out and do something, which is exactly what this track is about.
'Rock Won’t Get Old'
Inspired by getting a DVD from a friend of one of my favourite bands, The Who. My twin brother and I had been Who nuts since we were 13 and had a band playing their songs. Now I was 33 shouldn’t I have calmed down a bit? ….NO!
'Kiss and Hold'
A song about the wonderful support of a loving relationship but also how you come smack into confronting aspects of yourself.
'Like To Go On Loving'
This track was written during the lead-up to our wedding. With all the razzamatazz that can come along, we wanted to remember what it was all about.
'Know More Than Understand'
This one reflects a time of seeking answers and guidance and ending up trusting what you know in your heart, not your head. A few chords I used in the song would be a good example - what were they? I like them.
'Messy'
Well what can I say? “ Far too much!” my wife might say. When I first played it to her she laughed and then said “you’re not going to play that one to people are you?”
'I Know'
This is about following your passions and heart even when you have no guarantee of anything, except that you are doing what you love. Written at a time when I was going full-time into music and performance-related stuff. It is perhaps my favourite track.
'Thank You '
A very spontaneous reaction to getting a reminder of what a rough place I had been in in the past. I had a deep emotional sense of gratitude to my fantastic friends who helped me — and to finding the love of my life.
'Not Hide'
I suppose it is a song about getting to know yourself. Sometimes a songwriter writes a song for themselves, like making your own medicine, I need to take this one quite frequently!
