For Turn's tortured frontman Oliver Cole, the breakup of the band was merely the start of his woes...
In today's Hot Press he talks exclusively, and very openly, about heartache, and apologises to his former bandmates for the self-destructive way he handled the demise of Turn.
Regarding his departure from Turn, Cole says, “I think I was subconsciously trying to self-destruct everything. I was trying to leave Turn but I wasn’t going about it right. I’m really sorry now to everybody who was around me at that time, managers and everything, because I was really destructive, it was like I wanted it over, but I wanted them to fire me.”
On his new solo album We Albitri, Cole’s lyrics often scan like letters of chastisement written by his shadow self.
“I suppose on this record I had to deal with an awful lot of fallout. After I left Turn I split up with the same girl I was with for ten years... There’s a couple of songs on there I’m really proud of. ‘Moth’s Wing’, lyrically, is me at my most vulnerable and honest. It was a tough one, because I didn’t even choose to write those songs, they were just fuckin’ coming out of me, it was the record I had to make.”

In the Hot Press interview, a reinvigorated Cole also explains how he came to record his solo album in Freiburg in Germany and how a successful musician friend wrote him a cheque for five grand to fund the recording.
