Metallica travel to the ends of the earth for a unique concert...
This December, Metallica will be the second band in history to play on the driest, emptiest, windiest, driest, coldest place on earth- Antarctica. The first to perform on the Earth’s southernmost continent were small band of five scientists investigating climate change. Their audience consisted of 17 people – most likely scientists also – and perhaps a penguin or two.
This winter the colossal rock band from sunny LA will be making history at the heliport of the continent's Carlini Argentine Base, playing to a select audience of Coca-Cola Zero contest winners shipped in on an Antarctic cruise organized by the soda brand.
“After 30 years as a band, we have been unbelievably fortunate to visit just about every corner of the earth. . . except for one," the band said on their website yesterday. They have also revealed that the show will be their quietest as well as their coldest, as they will not be using amplification. Instead, everything will be transmitted to the audience through headphones; ‘A real first for us!’

Though they have not given a reason for this interesting twist, it is likely to be due to Antarctica’s unique environmental conditions and the logistics of transporting tons of ear-bashing equipment to the frozen wastelands. South American fans will enjoy the unique show streamed live, while the rest of us will have to wait for the film recording to be released at a later date.
