In the new issue of Hot Press, Marina Diamandis opens up to our own Colm O’Regan on happiness, death, and her take on the expectations for modern women
In the three years since the release of Electra Heart, her chart topping second album, a lot has changed for Marina and the Diamonds. The Welsh songstress took time out of the limelight, left the platinum wig behind, and went back to basics.
“I wanted to write songs about my life, and not think about anything else. After the complexity of what I’d done before, I just needed to do something simple.”
On her new album, FROOT, the confrontational side of Ms Diamandis does emerge at one point, on the outstanding ‘Can’t Pin Me Down’. In it, she sings “Do you really want me to write a feminist anthem/I’m happy cooking dinner in the kitchen for my husband.”
“It’s basically defying the efforts to pigeon-hole you,” she explains. “If I want to cook dinner for my husband then I will, and it doesn’t make me any less independent as a woman. People have this idea of what a woman should be. Why? Why does everything have to be so defined? It’s frustrating.”
