The crowd that has gathered for the Brooklyn rapper is even bigger than we had for Fatboy Slim last night!
The tent is heaving as Joey Bada$$ arrives to huge cheers. Happy to be in Ireland he quips with a wink, "I’m loving the green".
Skillfully avoiding a rap-battle challenge, Bada$$ went on to give us a scoop that he had been up for a part in RZA’s new movie but had to pass due to prior commitments. "It’s a sign that the future is bright", he says and we can’t help but agree.
Joey was asked if he thinks that hip-hop is seeing a resurgence based on a new generation of artists that don’t go for the classic bragging style. "I feel that there has always been artists that truly connect with the people, Mos Def and Talib Kweli, but often they’re the ones that get the least attention."
The rapper admitted that there is still some East Coast-West Coast tension in hip-hop and that it is harder to make a name for yourself coming from New York.
Looking relaxed on the Speakeasy couch, ahead of his set on the main stage tonight, Bada$$, spoke on topics ranging from politics to what he sees in his future, and about having a famous fan in President Obama’s daughter.
Unexpected non-sequitur of the night, "Sometimes I go and take a piss outside, even though my bath room is right there!"
Asked a question by one hopeless romantic in attendance, concrening writing music about relationships, Joey was quick to fire out "Make some noise for the Irish Drake right here!"
And that's it from the Speakeasy for Saturday of Forbidden Fruit.
See you all tomorrow with many more great appearances.
