Jack L adds new Vicar Street date
Kildare singer Jack L has announced a third consecutive night at Vicar Street on October 11.
The Hot Press Newsdesk, 15 Sep 2008

The singer, known to his mates as Jack Lukeman, is playing in support of his new album Burn On, which sees him tackling the work of cult American songwriter Randy Newman.
Lukeman will perform at Vicar Street with a full-band and, in addition to songs from Burn On, will play material from each of his previous five albums.
Tickets are available now for €33.60.
2008 has been a busy year for Lukeman who, in addition to recording Burn On and touring in the UK and US, has also been hard at work on a new album of original material, due for release next year.

Jack L’s ambitions appear to have shrunk a little in recent times – seemingly resigned to the fact that he’ll never be seen as Ireland’s spiritual heir to Scott Walker (or Tom Waits), he has settled for making records that appeal to folks who find the Divine Comedy a little too feisty. Not necessarily a bad thing: ‘Chocolate Eyes’ is a pretty-but-inconsequential AOR ballad, which contains the telling line “I gave up on dreams / and regrets”. Never fear, Jack – now that you’re aiming lower, you’re actually hitting closer to the mark.

An all-too-average song from a man who is capable of so much better. At this point in his career, Jack L. needs a show-stopper of a tune to bring his undoubted gifts to a wider audience: ‘So Far Gone’ will hardly be the one to do so.

Unencumbered by the fickleness of fashion, Jack Lukeman (or Jack L, as he is better known) has carved out his own niche in the melting pot that is music in the '90s. He has left the shade of Brel behind and has followed his own vision, which still has its roots in the romantic balladry of Scott Walker, Nick Cave and Frank Sinatra.
