Irish filmmakers take on Queen

...and emerge victorious!

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 04 Nov 2011

Buckled Cranium, AKA a collective of recent graduates from the Irish National Film School and some of their teachers, have won an international competition hosted by Talenthouse.com, a California-based creative social network, which “fosters new talent and partnerships across the globe.”

The brief was to come up with a new clip for Queen’s 1977 gem ‘Sheer Heart Attack’ – the band’s first official video since 1999. Filming in a West Dublin warehouse, the promo features Ireland’s Queen Experience tribute act who donned pink nighties and kitten-heels to recreate the classic ‘I Wanna Break Free’ promo.

The hundred entries that made it on to the longlist were scrutinised by Brian May, Roger Taylor and David Mallet who eventually plumped for the Buckled Cranium crew. So, director Luke Leslie, NPAS Director Eamon Farrell, Jill Doyle, AJ Banaghan, Sean Costelloe, Ericka Roe and Jessica Supple take a bow!

Live At The Point Depot

One of the funniest comedy sketches I ever saw concerned the timelessly naff quality of Queen’s sartorial sensibilities. It was on an Armstrong And Miller show about four years ago, and was set in the year 2040. A guide was taking a group of tourists around a stately home, which was putatively an exact replica of Freddie Mercury’s real life abode. The titular comedians were paid actors playing – for “educational purposes”, understand – Brian May and the late singer, with Ben Miller’s skin-tight leather costume being an especially funny tribute to Mercury’s near-heroically outrageous fashion sense.
