Hot Press is celebrating the 20-year milestone of U2’s Pop Mart Tour, highlighting the original 1997 cover featured on the Hot Press’s U2 cover wall.
Today’s Pop is everywhere: One Direction, Eminem, Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj, Kendrick Lamar and other artists have made it to the world’s biggest genre of music. Hot Press looks back on the makings of U2’s Pop, an album that made pop popular.
Back in 1997, U2 was a boundary-breaking pioneer with their music. “There was a time when pop seemed sort of insulting and lightweight,” Bono admits. As their Pop tour turned out to be a success, they broke the taboo of success. “We were supposed to feel guilty about the fact that we’d been successful. But that was what we wanted, right from the start: to be one of the biggest bands in the world.”
At a later stage, the negative connotation of Pop crystallised something for the U2 singer. Pop. It’s time to re-appropriate the word. Turn it into a badge of honour. What do you do? I m a member of a pop group. What sort of music do you play? Pop music!
