A robot movie that dares to take itself seriously
Drama
We've seen so many Transformers movies in recent years that we may be tempted to write off any movie featuring a robot as pure escapist, violent, popcorn fun. But South African director Neill Blomkamp seeks something deeper and more real in his forays into science fiction. His latest and only third feature film, Chappie, looks to do with robots what his 2009 film District 9 did with aliens, and that's a very good thing.
Chappie tells the story of the first robot that can think and feel in a humanlike manner. Naturally, this is a miracle of sorts to some and an incredible threat to others.
Frequent Blomkamp collaborator Sharlto Copley does voice and motion capture work for the titular robot, with Hugh Jackman, Dev Patel and Sigourney Weaver also starring.
