Game Of Thrones author George RR Martin has confirmed that Wild Cards, the science fiction superhero comic book series he edits, will be adapted for television.
Wild Cards is set in the post-World War II United States and focuses on a number of superheroes who contracted an alien virus that gave them superhuman abilities. Martin has worked on the series of comics and novels since 1987.
Announcing the news on his blog, Martin revealed that while he won't be working on the series himself ("my own development deal is exclusive to HBO," he says), Universal Cable Productions (UCP) has acquired the rights to adapt the Wild Cards universe for TV. UCP is home to shows such as Mr Robot, Suits and Law & Order.
"Which stories will be adapted? Which characters will be featured? Hard to say at this early stage," Martin writes. "Only one thing I can say for (almost) sure. You will be seeing [character] Croyd Crenson, no matter shape the eventual show or shows ends up taking. It wouldn't be Wild Cards without the Sleeper."
"I have every confidence in [the production team]... I think they will do a terrific job. Wish them luck," Martin added.

Martin went on to stress that the series is currently in the development stage and could possibly never actually make it to screens: "Of course, Hollywood is Hollywood, and nothing is ever certain in development... but I think I hope I cross my fingers that the Wild Cards will be coming to your home screens in the next year or two."
The author also confirmed that he is still writing the much-delayed The Winds Of Winter novel.
