Our weekly musical dash around the interwebs, just that little bit early…
Free Music Friday on a Thursday? “What sort of madness is this?” we hear you saying. Well, Team Hot Press is moving down en masse tonight to Deer Farm where three-days of full-blooded Indiependence fun awaits, not least in our Hot Spot which will be hosting public interviews, signings and live sessions. With all that going on, we thought we’d get in early with our cavalcade of tunes.
Former In Tua Nua man Paul Byrne is letting you name your price for Cruel And Tender Ways, his new album which is equal parts Richard Hawley and Roy Orbison. That obviously being a very good thing! Catch him live on August 21 when he plays Dublin’s Sugar Club.
Also new from the Noise Trade stable is 2 S’es Not Ryan, a six-track sampler from helium voiced Australian Gossling who’s a seriously big deal back home, and a World Cafe Session from Philadelphia’s Strand Of Oaks who also throws in album track, ‘Shut In’, which is epic beyond belief.
Mixtape of the Week goes to Kitty Cash’s extremely groovesome Love The Free Vol. II, which manages to weave in such diverse talents as Alison Valentine, Bipolar Sunshine, Jungle Pussy, Kilo Kish and Dev Hynes.
If it’s something a little harder you’re looking for, Killah Priest hosts the first in a new series of Spitfire mixes, with Mobb Depp, Ghostface Killah, Royce Da 5’9, Slaughterhouse and the somewhat unfortunately named Illah Ghee among the star turns.

American National Public Radio also treats us to download sets from Norwegian very alt. folkers Highasakite and Saintseneca, a Columbus crew with an even more eclectic range of instrumentation.
He’s been playing it live for a while, and now Chance The Rapper is treating fans to a studio version of the Arthur soundtracking ‘Wonderful Everyday’, which includes Wyclef among its cast of backing singers.
Free Music Friday’s eagerness to hear FKA Twigs’ LP1 has just ramped up another couple of gears thanks to the gorgeously staccato ‘Pendulum’, which made its radio bow this week.
We are seriously looking forward to Finding Fela, Alex Gibney’s sweeping portrait of Fela Kuti, the King of Afrobeat who made it his business to get right up the Nigerian military dictatorship’s nose during the 1980s.
“He had no fear, to get thrown in jail every time a single came out,” says ?uestlove while one of his band members notes that, “By the time he comes out of prison in ’86, he was second only to Nelson Mandela.”
Interestingly, one of his sons, Seun, features on the new Sinéad O'Connor album, I’m Not Bossy, I’m The Boss.
And with that, we jump into the Hot Press jalopy and head to Mitchelstown. If your Indie-bound yourself, make sure to pop into the Hot Spot. We have Pringles… And keep those links coming to @stuartclark66
