Free Music Friday!

Some top-notch tunes to start the weekend!

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 13 Jul 2012

Before heading off to Blighty to see our 85-year-old Mum – we’ve run out of clean socks and underwear so we have to – here’s another batch of Free Music Friday wondrousness to brighten up your weekend.

First to 3voor12.vpro.nl/luisterpaal/albums.html where you can cop an earful of the new Soundtrack Of Our Lives, The View, The Wilderness Of Manitoba, Visions Of Trees, Deep Time and Lianne La Havas albums.

Serj Tankian, Hellyeah, P.O.D., The Early November, Glass Cloud and Brendan James have new offerings streaming at www.music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/#/1 while www.music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/spinner#/1 adds Dirty Projectors, Old Crow Medicine, Mission Of Burma, Digitalism, Dan Le Sac, Husky and The Beat to the list.

www.npr.org/series/98679384/first-listen weigh in with JEFF The Brotherhood, Baroness and Fang Island streams plus one of their downloadable sessions from the whoopin’ and a hollerin’ Brandi Carlisle.

Our Hot Press cover star Plan B is offering a free www.time4planb.co.uk/ download of Ill Manors track ‘Falling Down’ in return for signing-up to his mailing-list.

Next, one of the best things we’ve ever brought you on Free Music Friday – a 1996 live Jurassic 5 radio mix, which is part hip hop history lesson/part freestylin’ masterclass and 100% awesome!!!

You’re also going to have your minds blown by Azealia Banks’ Fantasea mixtape, which is awaiting www.twitter.com/AZEALIABANKS/status/223240966717448192 download. A tantaslisng taster of what awaits when her album finally drops – we’re hearing October, but she’s positively My Bloody Valentine-esque when it comes to release dates – it includes a particularly nifty cover of The Prodigy’s ‘Out Of Space’.

The language, we’re delighted to report, is thoroughly deplorable. So much so that we expect Labour TD Eamon Maloney to call on the Gardaí to arrest the internet for facilitating it.

Free Music Friday has been seriously – as opposed to frivolously – enjoying Channel Orange, the new album from California R&B man Frank Ocean, which can be heard at www.frankocean.tumblr.com

More on the gentleman in question soon in Hot Press.

It’s been a topsy-turvy old week for 50 Cent. First he celebrated his birthday by giving us the pressie of a free www.thisis50.com/download-new-50 mixtape. Then he went and had his promo visit to Carphone Warehouse in Dundrum Town Centre cancelled for making disparaging Twitter remarks about special needs kids. The moral here Fiddy, is let your music do the talking.

There’s more mixtapeing – and one suspects from the cover, marijuana smoking – at www.ballerstatus.com/2012/07/11/free-download-t-mills-thrillionaire-mixtape/#.T_6tCHCyS_F where T. Mills does some serious representing for the Riverside, California massive.

To get you in the mood for the new Batman romp, the Dark Knight Rises soundtrack is streaming at www.empireonline.com/news/story.asp?NID=34498; a free album from dubby/steppy Dubliners Ghosts can be found at www.ghostsmusic.bandcamp.com/album/judge; www.mtvhive.com/2012/07/11/mum-early-birds-album-stream is the get-to place for a pre-release listen to the Múm a new Irish alt. supergroup makes lots of lovely noise at nospillblood.bandcamp.com; and Orbital treat us to a killer mixtape featuring themselves, Steve Angel, Yazoo, Nine Inch Nails and Errol Alkan – to name but five – below.

A thing of recurring joy is Spinner magazine’s free monthly mixtape, which can be found at www.spinner.com/2012/07/02/free-songs-download-30-mp3s-from-spinners-june-monthly-mixtape and includes Slowdance, Dusted, Nu Sensae, Chester French, Giant Giant Sand, Amanda Palmer and Psychic Twin among its bounteous delights.

This week’s visual treats start with this go-kartastic preview of Aesop Rock’s Skelethon album.

The Killers took us all by surprise on Tuesday night by suddenly unleashing their new ‘Runaways’ single on YouTube. We’re now even more excited about them headlining Electric Picnic than we were before.

Another band making a triumphant return with their ‘Octopus’ single and video are Bloc Party. We’re also hearing whispers of a pre-Christmas gig – as ever stay tuned to hotpress.com for details.

Anticipation for Broooooce & The E Street Band’s RDS shows reaches fever pitch with this vid of them tearing it up at Roskilde with The Roots.

"E Street Shuffle" with The Roots (Live at Roskilde 2012) from Columbia Records on Vimeo.

Unknown on this side of the Atlantic – but not for long one suspects – is Chelsea Wolfe, the LA-based singer whose acoustic album is due in the autumn and trailed by this video.

Grimes’ rich vein of form continues with this mini-documentary look at her recent visit to Primavera.

Blur just can’t stop hanging out together! The possibility of a new album grows ever greater with this new studio-based promo for ‘Under The Westway’. Sounding/looking good, gentlemen!

On which sweet note we head to the airport for our flight back to Blighty. Have a fab weekend and send all your lovely links to @stuartclark66
