There’s Irish involvement in two of this season’s big Stateside TV premieres. First up is The Knick, a sort of 1900s ER set in a New York hospital which is presided over Chris Owen’s Dr. Jake Thackery, a pioneering surgeon who just happens to be a full-blown opium fiend.
There are also stellar performances from Bono and Ali’s daughter Eve Hewson and André Holland who stirs it up big time as The Knickerbocker Hospital’s only black doc, Algernon Edwards.
Ms. Hewson is a hot Hollywood property right now, with a role alongside Tom Hanks, Bily Magnussen, Amy Ryan and Alan Alda in an as-yet-untitled Steven Spielberg-directed and Coen Brothers-written cold war thriller due in 2015.
We’re also liking the look of Outlander, a Starz offering that finds a World War II British Army nurse being transported back in time to 1743.
Once your disbelief has been suspended, it’s a fine piece of fantasy hokum starring Monaghan’s very own Catriona Balfe.
