Des Bishop: “Comedy is great for chicks!”

The Irish stand up talks about how to laugh girls into bed, surviving sibling rivalry and the death of his father…

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 30 Nov 2011

Revealed in a fresh interview with Hot Press’ very own Olaf Tyarensen, Des Bishop has voiced his professional opinion that comedy makes it “really fuckin’ easy to meet women”. The star goes on to explain why, when it comes to cracking a few jokes, looks really aren’t that important.

“You see other comedians and they get chicks," Bishop tells Tyaransen, "and you say, “Well then comedy must be good for getting women because these motherfuckers are ugly!”

Jokes aside, it’s been quite a turbulent year for Mr. Bishop. The death of his father in February lead him to publish the autobiographical book My Dad Was Nearly James Bond – a move that didn’t immediately sit well with his mother.

"We had a little bit of a difficult time, not so much she didn’t want the book coming out, but I guess I was pissed off at her because I had a little recall about my own anger around all that stuff. And she was having a tough time with me, just thinking it’s bad enough losing your fuckin’ husband, now I’ve got this shit to deal with. That didn’t last very long, we got to the other end of it quite quickly, but not too quick either.”

You can read the intimate and funny interview in its entirety in the bumper Christmas/New Year issue of Hot Press, which goes on sale tomorrow December 1.

The Bishop And The Bond

Channelling the grief he has experienced over the long illness and death of his father into comedy helped Des Bishop cope with the loss of a loved one. Now he has written movingly about his dad, a New Yorker who turned his back on showbusiness – having auditioned for the role of James Bond – to support his family. But alongside the affection there is also a deep ambivalence to be found in his memoir.
