Fancy a get away with a difference? What about a converted Soviet era aircraft carrier, the centre-piece of a new Communist theme park in China?
Forget Trabolgan, Caught In The Net is spending its summer holliers this year residing in/on the Tianjin Hotel, a former Soviet-era aircraft carrier that the Chinese have turned into a luxury 148-bedroom five-star.
It’s the centerpiece of a fun-for-all-the-family military theme park celebrating “the might that communism can achieve.”
Find out more at bit.ly/uEH774 or if your Chinese is up to scratch binhaipark.cn.
If that’s not exclusive enough for you, why not splash out on your own private floating island – a snip at $2000 million from www.orsosisland.com.
On of this year’s big Sundance hits was The Invisible War, a searing exposé of the 19,000 US military personnel who are sexually abused every year.
“Today, a female soldier in Iraq and Afghanistan is more likely to be raped than killed or injured by enemy fire,” says director Kirby Dick. “They’re being assaulted by their fellow soldiers, commanders and officers – by the people whose job it is to protect them.”
Dick is spearheading an extensive social media Stateside to highlight this obscenity – and would doubtless appreciate a dig out on this side of the Atlantic too. notinvisible.org has the full lowdown.
Another documentary catching Caught In The Net’s eye is The Imposter, the stranger than fiction tale of a young boy kidnapped from his Texas home and three-and-a-half-years later turns up in Spain. Or does he? aetv.com/indiefilm has the lowdown on it and loads more interesting-looking documentaries.
Finally on the film front – that’s a lot of f-words – Caught In The Net is jolly excited by its first peek at On The Road, a stylish-looking adaptation of the Jack Kerouac cult classic starring Garrett Hedlund, Sam Riley, Kristen Stewart, Kirsten Dunst, Amy Adams, Viggo Mortensen and Tom Sturridge. The first trailer is residing at bit.ly/xqKr1q.
Which just leaves time for quick visits to aretheyhidingfromtwitter.com (odd how the Murdochs’ pal Jeremy Hunt hasn’t been social media-ing recently); bit.ly/L8jsVL (Alan Partridge’s East Anglian love affair continues); and
bit.ly/L9j2hX (the fabulous new animated video from Dublin hip hopper Rejjie Snow).
