Causing major ructions in the States is Shahs Of Sunset, a new Bravo reality jobbie, which follows a group of young Iranian-Americans whose parents decided this Sharia law lark wasn’t for them, and fled the old country before Ayatollah Khomeini sprung his 1979 revolution.
A less cerebral take on The Kardashians – we didn’t think it was possible either, but hey! – it’s full of horrible beautiful people, the most irksome of whom is Golnesa “GG” Gharachedagi, a 29-year-old Kim-meets-Paris type who proffers, “There are two things I don’t like. I don’t like ants, and I don’t like ugly people”, and whose most oft-used phrase is, “Charge it to my daddy!”
Suddenly we’re on the mullahs’ side. Set in the ‘Tehrangeles’ area of Beverly Hills, it’s gone down like a tonne of bricks with less ostentatious members of the local Persian community.
“The show wants to present caricatures of Iranian-Americans,” one irate viewer vents. “This is not entertaining. Rather, it is racist and only encourages others who do not know Persians in our American society to feed into the worst kind of stereotype, rather than showing a new generation of ambitious yet hardworking Iranian-Americans.”
