The fan who incurred Pennie from The Automatic's wrath after clmbing onstage at their Dublin show on Tuesday explains what happened.
After a splot of sleuthing, the HP Newsdesk has identified the miscreant as Donal Keaveney who's the lead singer with Dublin urchins Hassle Merchants.
"I did it 'cause I was a little bit bored, a little bit drunk and, yeah, it was a bit of PR for the band," an unrepentant Keavney tells us. "When they started playing 'Raoul' I thought, 'Fuck it, I'll try climbing the amps.' I told my mate who was with me, and he was well up for it. We both tried but he got caught by the security guards. I sat there for a while and then the keyboardist of The Automatic came up and started shouting at me to get off. He started attacking me and I can't really remember how I got pulled off stage but I was.
"I've done a similar thing before at the Carlow Music Factory with Babyshambles. I got up on stage during 'Fuck Forever'. Pete Doherty was well up for it – we had a bit of a sing-song, but then the bouncers became involved. I also got up on stage at We Are Scientists at The Village in Dublin, but I got caught by the bouncers before I had a chance to do anything.
"Would I go and see The Automatic again? No, but I'd see The Horrors. I thought they were amazing."
Alex Pennie can climb on top of the Hassle Merchants' speakers on February 24 when the Dubliners play a hometown show in Eamon Doran's.
