A major rally has been announced for tomorrow (Saturday 27 August) to support Michael D Higgins in his campaign to become President. The rally takes place at 2pm in Courthouse Square, Galway.
Arts groups will be gathering in the square and the event will feature impromptu musical and drama performances from a wide variety of Galway groups and will be preceded by a mini parade from Shop St. to Courthouse Square.
"Widely regarded as the best Minister of Culture, the best Minister for the Irish Language, and the best Minister for Film of recent years," a statement from the organisers said, "his independence of vision, cultural agenda, his clear view of Ireland's place in the world and his track record of commitment to social equality makes him an ideal candidate for the Presidency."
The idea behind the gathering is to wish Michael D well and showcase some of his achievements – and his vision – prior to setting off on a long and challenging national campaign which will inevitably have to focus on constituencies outside Galway.

It is entirely appropriate that the backdrop for the event will be the Town Hall Theatre, a facility that Michael D was instrumental in bringing to fruition when he was Minister in 1995. And in a further reminder of Michael’s long engagement with the arts, the entertainment will include a rendition by the Timbertramps of the Sawdoctors’ classic 'Michael D Rockin’ the Dáil'.
