The action was done in solidarity with Sinead O'Connor.
One of the more surreal moments of Arcade Fire's gig at Marlay Park Sunday took place when the band took a break from performing and were replaced by audio of Sinead O'Connor's 'Nothing Compares To You'.
Suddenly a person wearing a television screen with the song's iconic video playing, along with someone wearing a paper mache head of Pope Francis appeared on stage. As fans sang along, Francis lifted a photo of pop singer Miley Cyrus, who recently got involved in a Twitter feud with O'Connor and mocked her struggles with emotional breakdowns, up before ripping it in half to the roars of the audience. The act was an obvious reference towards O'Connor's iconic / infamous Saturday Night Live performance.
