The Alan Vega Tribute show will broadcast on Dublin Digital Radio tonight, August 3, at 7pm.
It’s just over a year since Suicide frontman and co-founder Alan Vega passed away - aged 78. Together with Martin Rev, they created a sound in 1970s New York that was the precursor to new wave, industrial and techno. They were the punk band that even the punks didn’t want, and their confrontational shows were infamous - inciting riots and drawing punches and missiles from the crowds.
‘Dream Baby Dream’ has become an alternative anthem, covered by Bruce Springsteen and Arcade Fire, and artists like Bono, Bruce Springsteen & Thom Yorke cite Vega as an influence.
Suicide’s eponymous debut album was released in 1977 to mixed reviews, but now holds a place holds a place in the canon of punk rock.
Vega and Rev continued to perform together until shortly before Vega’s death, and Vega’s career was defined by a series of consistently inventive solo and collaborative albums.
FADER label have just released Alan’s posthumous album IT, recorded over a six year period with his wife and musical partner Liz Lamere.
