For the week that's in it, we asked some artists to tell us their favourite Bowie tracks...
To celebrate official release today of David Bowie's new album, The Next Day (woop!), we asked a few famous friends to share their favourite Bowie tracks, and let us know what they make of the new LP.
First up, Galway singer Laura Sheeran reveals,
"I wasn’t expecting to like The Next Day as much as I did. I’d been playing the single over and over on tour and perhaps had got a bit sick of it. I’ve played the album three times now and I’ve been getting to know the songs. ‘Valentine’s Day’ and ‘I’d Rather Be High’ are really good and the final, track, ‘Heat’ is incredible – so intense and the string work is amazing.
Growing up, my dad was a massive fan and was always encouraging me to listen to him. I started to get into him and I really liked the fashion element – the glam style and so on. ‘Heroes’, ‘Life On Mars?’ and ‘Changes’ are tracks that would stand out to me. His back catalogue is obviously so eclectic and so many of the videos are brilliant too.
Bowie is such an intriguing figure and there’s always a fascination with what he’s going to do next. You take say, Bob Dylan, and he always there, people listen to him and appreciate him, but maybe there isn’t the same level of anticipation about what his next move will be.
Overall, there’s a nice pace to the album; it builds up, develops nicely, then takes a breather in the middle before building back up again. I was too young to experience Bowie albums the first time around, so it’s nice to be able to take in one of his records as it’s actually released. And maybe more Irish men should dress like David Bowie!"
