We lead with Leaders Of Men, and follow up with some of the biggest international acts around...
The Hot Press Newsdesk, 10 Aug 2012
As another week draws to a close – how are those post-Katie Taylor winning gold heads? – Free Music Friday returns with another quality collection of tuneage.
Kicking us off is the new four-tracker from Leaders Of Men, which confirms what we’ve always thought – they’re going to be ginormous. Check it out right here.
Also greatly enhancing our lives is the http://www.npr.org/2012/07/31/157665706/sharon-van-etten-live-in-concert-newport-folk-2012 download of Sharon Van Etten’s superb Newport Folk Festival set.
Meanwhile, Django Django’s eponymous debut album is back streaming at http://www.npr.org/series/98679384/first-listen ahead of its Stateside release; http://3voor12.vpro.nl/luisterpaal/albums.html lets you check out new collections from James Yorkston, Antibalas, Lincoln Durham, Eugene McGuinness and The Steamboat Cabaret; Elle Varner, 10 Years, Reverend Peyton’s Big, Parry Adams, Jason Cruz & Howl and The Wicked do the pre-release stream thing at http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/#/1; and http://music.aol.com/new-releases-full-cds/spinner#/1 lets you try Niki & The Dove, Nu Sensae, Lianne La Havas, Birdy, Masked Intruder, Buffalo Killers, Cold Blank and Koko Beware before you buy.
http://www.noisetrade.com/davidwaxmuseum has a free EP from David Wax Museum, a Mexo-Americana outfit that Civil Wars, Rodrigo y Gabriela and Calexico fans are instantly going to fall in love with; http://blogs.centrictv.com/music/soulsessions/excusive-laura-izibor-releases-single-gracefully-new-brooklyn-sessions-ep lets you check out the new Laura Izibor single, ‘Gracefully’; Tribes offer a nifty new tune in return for signing up to their https://www.facebook.com/tribesband/app_294224610675771 mailing-list; confirmed this week for Electric Picnic, Of Monsters And Men are streaming their immense My Head Is An Animal album at http://www.purevolume.com/news/Of-Monsters-and-Men-Stream-New-Album-My-Head-Is-An-Animal – a must for anyone who’s missing Arcade Fire!; http://thexx.info/chained has an awesome new tune from The xx; http://soundcloud.com/youarestars/backlines is the go-to place for the new Stars single, ‘Backlines’; and YouTube is hosting Major Lazer’s opinion-dividing ‘Settle Down’ remix. Personally, we reckon it’s dead funky!
We strongly recommend that you make the acquaintance of In The Willows, a Waterford outfit who peddle the lushest of melodies.
Niamh De Barra is asking you to “name your price” for her superb Echo album. For once we think pockets should be deeply dug into!
Free Music Friday is loving the orchestra-tastic new Antony & The Johnsons live album, Cut The World, which is streaming in its entirey below.
This week’s visual treats start with The Gaslight Anthem mainman Brian Fallon performing a stripped down version of their ‘45’ single. No offence now, but he seems to have developed a distinct rock ‘n’ roll pallor since we last saw him.
Also courtesy of Minesota’s 89.3 The Current comes this Liars session performance of ‘No. 1 Against The Rush’.
Recent Hot Press cover star Plan B has just unleashed the video for ‘Deepest Shame’, the latest track to be pulled from the Ill Manors soundtrack. Gritty as fuck, it underlines just what a great filmmaker the Drew boy is.
Having teased us for a week with a viral teaser campaign, Tom Waits premiered his ‘Hell Broke Luce’ video on Wednesday. While not the tour we were hoping for, it’s a hellishly brilliant four minutes from the Godfather of Growl.
As fabulous as those Plan B and Tom Waits promos are, they come in second and third this week behind Two Door Cinema’s ‘Sleep Alone’ vid – a mad, surreal gold medal of a video!
And that, we’re afraid, is your Free Music Friday lot. Comments and links are, as ever, greatly welcomed at @stuartclark66 and email@example.com. Enjoy the sunshine!
