Martin Scorsese to direct Rolling Stones documentary

Having done such a bang up job last year with Bob Dylan, Martin Scorsese is turning his attentions to those other rock ‘n’ roll behemoths, The Rolling Stones.

The former Tisch student – see elsewhere for more on the NYU film school – started work on the project last week when Mick, Keef, Ronnie and Charlie performed at the Bill Clinton 60th birthday bash in New York’s Beacon Theater.
Guesting with the band on a clutch of old chestnuts were Jack White (‘Loving Cup’), Christina Aguilera (‘Live With Me’) and Buddy Guy (‘Champagne & Reefer’).
After that it was off to the after-show in the nearby Gramercy Park Hotel where Courtney Love and movie producer Stephen Bing were among the high profile guests.
As for the Stones documentary, that’s likely to hit the big screen in late 2007 with Paramount Pictures snapping up the North American distribution rights.
Interestingly, backstage coverage of the quartet’s current world tour is being provided by Albert Maysles who shot the Altamont-chronicling Gimme Shelter film.
