Pugwash meet hero Brian Wilson

Accolades don’t come much higher than being asked to meet your idols, but that’s what happened to Dublin pop-festish band Pugwash when Beach Boys legend Brian Wilson got a load of their new single.

The Hot Press Newsdesk, 21 Jul 2005

As the pic of Pugwash’s frontman Thomas Walsh shows, he met his hereo while Brian was this side of the pond to play Vicar St.

Thomas was also asked to perform at the recent Q&A and screening of the documentary Beautiful Dreamer: Brian Wilson and the Story of Smile at the IFI.

The film's director, David Leaf, is also a huge fan – he's said that their track ‘It’s Nice To Be Nice’ hasn’t been off his stereo for weeks.

“We're awaiting some more personal feedback from the band and Brian when they get home from this current tour, but the signs are all wonderful,” says a rather excited Thomas on the band’s official site.

Thomas Walsh was the underappreciated genius of Irish rock until his Duckworth Lewis Method hook-up with Neil Hannon put him on the map. One Ivor Novello nomination later, his band Pugwash are signed to a major and he’s receiving fan mail from ELO’s Jeff Lynne. As he gears up for his date at the inaugural Homegrown festival at INEC Killarney, the songwriting wizard talks to Olaf Tyaransen.
