Leya singer hospitalised after Oxegen collapse
Belfast rockers Leya were unable to perform at the Oxegen festival on Sunday, when singer Ciaran Gribbin was suddenly taken ill with suspected food poisoning.
Ciaran became ill when en route to Punchestown from Belfast early on Sunday morning.
Fellow band member Michael Keeney found him lying on the ground next to his car.
“He was very weak,” said Michael. “He had lost a lot of body fluids on the journey down, and tried to stand to make it to the stage area, but just collapsed again”.
Onsite medics were summoned and Ciaran was moved to the medical centre, where four successive intravenous drips of saline solution were administered to rehydrate him.
He was then transferred by ambulance to nearby Naas General Hospital, where staff continued to treat him for acute dehydration.
Ciaran was kept in for observation overnight and is expected to be allowed to leave for home today.
Leya’s appearance at Oxegen was scheduled to be the final date of their debut UK and Irish tour, to promote their debut single ‘All On The Black’.
