Y Control

It’s certainly one of the sexiest singles you’ll hear all year, though beware…for effect, it needs to be played really fucking loud.

Tanya Sweeney, 05 Nov 2004

As worthy successors to Sonic Youth’s crown of cool, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs favour moody, fuck-you posturing, beefy bass lines and an almighty clash of sex and searing, sublime guitar riffs. Add the mildly erotic, throaty vocals of Karen O, and it makes for pretty spectacular listening. It’s certainly one of the sexiest singles you’ll hear all year, though beware…for effect, it needs to be played really fucking loud.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs & Fight Like Apes

The last time I saw Fight Like Apes, their performance was a little ramshackle, to say the least. The four-piece looked like they needed a few weeks off, and quite frankly, we were concerned that one of our favourite bands might be burned out.

Is Is

The first new material from New York’s finest avant garde trio since last year’s superb Show Your Bones album, Is Is isn’t a new album, unfortunately.

Down Boy

Taken from the much-anticipated Is Is EP, ‘Down Boy’ is the sound of Yeah Yeah Yeahs having a subdued moment, with Karen O’s breathy vocals all too prevalent. Like the rest of the tracks on the release, it was written in 2004, and though we’ll lap it up because they’re Yeah Yeah Yeahs and they can do what they like and we’ll love it, one can’t help but wish they’d taken this opportunity to show off their post-Show Your Bones wisdom instead.

The story of O

She’s one of the sassiest, not to say iconic, frontwomen in rock. Up close however, Yeah Yeah Yeahs singer Karen O is just a big pussycat. Look, we’ve even made her cry.

Show Your Bones

Show Your Bones sees the crew catch their breath in the less chaotic mid-tempo pop lane. Happily, we may now discover what Nick Zinner’s ornate guitar work actually sounds like when not condensed into the over-excited, if enjoyable twenty second spurts that characterised the first record.

Mars

Machine-gun drums, staccato bursts of guitar and laid-back vocals, ‘Mars’ is, for my money, the finest three and a half minutes on the Yeah Yeah Yeahs’ much-lauded debut and is far more interesting than their usual sonic bluster.

Fever To Tell

Breathless, sexy, frantic – the album’s forty minutes include five minutes waiting around for a hidden extra track; don’t bother, it’s shite – Fever To Tell is a racket but an undeniably glorious one.
