We Used To Be Friends

Colm O Hare, 09 May 2003

The electro robot dance revival starts here, replete with cheesy Dr Rhythm handclaps. ‘…Friends’ walks day-pass circles around a throbbing noo-wave verse before the fop-rock block party gets gatecrashed by a beered-up falsetto chorus, this is a tune composed of a half dozen retro-cool bits and bobs rather than Ivor Novello material. The clumpy faux futurist covers of Blondie’s ‘Call Me’ and Frankie’s ‘Relax’ on what used to be the b-side suggest the Dandys’ new record will come clad in pixie boots, PLO scarf and a cavalry shirt.

Have A Kick Ass Summer (Me & My Friends)

You have to suspect that, if it were not for their knack of knocking out the odd pop gem, the Dandy Warhols’ 15 minutes would’ve been up long ago. This isn’t quite one of those, although it does have that genuinely unhinged feel to it that has characterised their best work.
