Here I Am
Tom Dunne, 21 Jun 2002

Hard to believe this is the same man that made ‘Heartbreaker’ and ‘Gold’ and used to be in Whiskeytown. I jest obviously but you’ve no idea how hard it is to find interesting things to say about Ryan Adams. Ryan is a seasoned songwriter and wrote this for the movie ‘Spirit’: Stallion Of The Cimarron for which I am sure it is perfectly adequate. The Lord knows there’s nothing more exciting than an adequate song.

Ryan Adams’ third album in the space of a year is a meditation on his 20s, with each of the nine songs representing a year of his life from 21 to his current age of 29 – apparently he didn’t think 20 counted as he still felt like he was 19.

There’s a danger that someone who tries to be everything to everyone – a country crooner for Mary-Lou, a rocker for Sadie – ends up meaning not much to anybody. So while Adams’ post Whiskeytown affairs have been inconsistent in terms of style and quality, Cold Roses is a return to the form that made him famous.
