‘My Declaration’

Not the greatest of songs, but Baxter’s warm honey tinged vocal mesmerises, sucking the listener in. A bit cringe-worthy at times, there’s still enough here to warrant further investigation.

Steve Cummins, 18 Oct 2004

The second single to be lifted from Tom Baxter’s much acclaimed debut is a miniature anthem building to a crushing crescendo from a sparse piano and vocal accompaniment. Not the greatest of songs, but Baxter’s warm honey tinged vocal mesmerises, sucking the listener in. A bit cringe-worthy at times, there’s still enough here to warrant further investigation.

Tom Baxter live at The Olympia, Dublin

For all the romanticism and swoonsome sentiment, Baxter’s sound is frightfully muscular. Aided tonight by a string quartet, his set is bracing and uplifting in spades. Predictably, ‘Half A Man’ builds to a swooping crescendo, ‘The Moon & Me’ is brimming with vitality and substance, while his heartfelt rendition of ‘Almost There’ is almost unbearably perfect. As it was always meant to be, ‘My Declaration’ is an inspiration, intensely stirring the senses with little more than a perfect falsetto and a string quartet.
