Toby Kaar, live at Twisted Pepper
The Cork man's energy sets him apart...
Toby Kaar's Twisted Pepper set was again one step ahead of his peers - his energy setting him apart. The crowd watched in awe as Toby controlled every aspect of his sound using hardware devices like midi controllers and the tenori-on. While many producers are still playing their tracks whole, with no room for deviation, Kaar puts a lot of effort into making his performances as live as possible.
His performance on the night included an abundance of new material never heard before, which will hopefully appear on his forthcoming EP. His new material definitely stood out from his older tunes. The change is exciting, with more depth and detail brought to the textures within the music. The mix of fresh new beats in the material was also another element driving each song.
As well as the new material heard on the night, he also played crowd-pleasers like the well known remix of Ten Past Sevens 'Johnston's Cows'. Another highlight was a remix of TLC's 1999 hit 'No Scrubs'. The audience were loving it as three female singers joined Toby on the main stage as he improvised with the instrumental parts of the song.
Even though Toby won't have any official releases until he finishes his college course, his gigs are a definite must-see. Catch him in the Roisin Dubh in Galway on October 12, when he'll be playing along with Monto and little xs for eyes.
