Red Hot Chili Peppers & Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds

“They’re my songs, so I’ll fucking sing ‘em if I want to!”

Stuart Clark, 01 Aug 2012

That was Noel Gallagher justifying the playing of nine Oasis tunes when he made his solo bow last year in the Olympia. There was a similar split of old and new in February when he stormed the O2.

Tonight though, it’s mostly about the High Flying Birds album, which results in Chili Peppers fans remaining in the bar and Gallagher scowling his way to the finish line. He’s unlikely to make the same mistake next month in Marlay.

If Noel underwhelms, Flea & Co. exceed expectations with a 19-song all killer, no filler set that includes particularly muscular versions of ‘Monarchy Of Roses’, Stevie’s ‘Higher Ground’, ‘Californication’ and ‘By The Way’.

There’s no ‘Amhrán na bhFiann’ whilst wearing socks on their cocks à la Dalymount Park in 1994, but the occasion is marked by the bass-slappin’ segueing of ‘Sunday Bloody Sunday’ into ‘Suck My Kiss’.

29-years in and the Chilis have lost none of their potency.
