Our Thursdays review, Galway
It's a battle for glory between Fia Rua and Black Tooth tonight...
Fia Rua is Eoghan Burke, a singer songwriter whose talent and sincerity is deserving of a much bigger audience. Posessing an incredibly distinctive voice with a quavering depth, he draws the listener in and holds nothing back. The set gathers momentum throughout, finishing with the Harmonium and Bodhran flavoured track 'Ghost'. Ably assisted by local hero Ross Rooney on bass, this is energetic, experimental alt-folk at its best.
Black Tooth is a pretty vile name for a band, but appropriate for the night. As this five piece take to the stage, the venue is suddenly heaving with zombies. It's a Facebook/Flashmob thing, and they've arrived on cue. Immediately there's a full dancefloor, and Black Tooth revel in it. Every track is polished and dirty, and really really loud. Lead singer Tadhg McMurrow nails every tune, including a finely rendered cover of Steppenwolf's 'Born to be Wild'. His coherent and powerful rock vocals have more than a hint of hip-hop in their delivery. Backed up by Albert Quinn's guitar and a drummer who eventually burst the skins, Black Tooth easily steal the show.
