Morrissey

Vicar Street, Dublin

Anne Sexton, 24 Aug 2011

Opening with ‘I Want The One I Can’t Have’, the bequiffed hero of the hour is in crowd-pleasing mode. Next up, ‘Irish Blood, English Heart’ and more classics like ‘You Have Killed Me’, ‘You’re The One For Me, Fatty’, ‘First Of The Gang To Die’ and ‘Speedway’.

Never a man to shy away from a controversial statement, Morrissey offers us “deepest sympathy” on the Queen’s visit – “a little old lady with a handbag.” An earlier controversial statement means that, even as Moz is singing his heart out, he is a trending topic on Twitter, being eviscerated for comparing the deaths in Norway to the slaughter of animals. If he realises this, he seems unperturbed. As a staunch vegetarian, Moz meant that all life is sacred and in case we missed this point, he sings ‘Meat Is Murder’ halfway through his set, although the response to this is relatively subdued.

It’s an evening of fan favourites – ‘Ouija Board, Ouija Board’, ‘Every Day Is Like Sunday’, ‘I Know It’s Over’, a cover of Lou Reed’s ‘Satellite Of Love’, wrapped up with a bow via ‘There Is A Light That Never Goes Out’.

Moz’s voice is in top form, the band is tight and we’re all dancing and singing along. It’s a wonderful show – just as we expected it would be.
