"It’s always good to see that multi-band packages like IMRO’s showcase series can fill a venue such as Whelan's"
Despite the holiday weekend, warm weather and numerous other attractions around town it’s always good to see that multi-band packages like IMRO’s showcase series can fill a venue such as Whelans. Like the crowd, the fare on offer tonight was mixed but largely excellent. Opening outfit Walnut To Zurick struggled a bit but eventually triumphed; with her Velvets-like guitar drone and bolero back-beat, Anne Scott’s hypnotic voice and ice-cool image made for an intriguing prospect – definitely one to watch. Always popular at these events, the ubiquitous Nina Hynes put in a typically confident and well-received performance, her edgy songs and minimalist guitar textures hitting the spot.
Taking to the stage amid whoops and hollers, the wonderful La Rocca were tight, lean and mean – all deft piano/keyboard lines, meaty rhythm section and frantic guitars. The tunes are great too – recalling the power-pop of the Doves with the energy of the Manics. The night was rounded off with an impressive set from electronic soul/dance outfit Hi.Rise who’ve been making waves with their distinctive blend of seductive melodies and beats.
