The Wombats Proudly Present...This Modern Glitch

Three years ago it seemed as if Scouse indie pop outfit The Wombats were omnipresent. Whether it was on the live front, on the radio or via a crude but admittedly funny TV show about teenagers, the trio’s music was virtually inescapable. So with that in mind, their decision to then take themselves off to some secluded spot for while to write album number two (after all that success) was a brave move that many record labels simply wouldn’t let happen in this day and age. However, thank whatever deity you pray to, ‘cos This Modern Glitch is their most accomplished release yet.
Like a lot of their peers, The Wombats have opted to embrace all things electro for their second effort. However, unlike Franz Ferdinand for example, the added synths never overshadow the hooks, augmenting rather than muffling the tunes. They’ve also upped the ante when it comes to colossal choruses and the likes of ‘Techno Fan’ and ‘Our Perfect Disease’ are chock-full of memorable melodies while ‘Anti D’s lyrics about singer Murph’s anti-depressant addiction prove that there’s a depth to the band too. Clocking in at a snappy 40 minutes …This Modern Glitch is an absolute joy to listen to and sees The Wombats do the unthinkable in today’s climate – make a record that’s actually better than their debut.
