Some Nights
A mixed bag for fun’s second outing
Pop rock New Yorkers fun. (that pesky full-stop is part of the name) may be new on this side of the Atlantic but their turn on Glee and the subsequent success of youth anthem ‘We Are Young’ (helped along by powerhouse Janelle Monae) have inspired massive expectations for the band’s second album Some Nights. Unfortunately the finished product doesn’t deliver on the promise. The Queen-esque ‘Intro’ feels like they’re trying too hard – but ‘Some Nights’ has the makings of another hit. Throw in ‘Carry On’, ‘Why Am I the One’ and, of course, ‘We Are Young’ and you have the high points. But they are too few and far between. The overly Auto-Tuned backing vocals throughout work occasionally but are often too shrill for comfort. The verdict? Some Nights is a pleasant but limited offering. Glee fans may like it.
